USP-PaCE-SD (South Pacific University)

Coastal water observation network of the Pacific

Sub-network coordinator : Antoine De Ramon N’Yeurt, Associate Professor, Pacific Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development (PaCE-SD-USP)

The University of the South Pacific (USP) joined the ReefTEMPS network in 2012 and maintains thirteen stations in the Fijian archipelago, fully equipped with SBE 56. This extension of the ReefTEMPS network was initially funded by the Pacific Fund for 12 months, and subsequently financed by internal USP research funds.
USP is working with local partners, including an NGO (Conservation International) and a dive cruise provider (Nai’a Fiji), to relieve some of the sites.

The ReefTEMPS network is currently being upgraded as part of the HEAT program. In 2022 and 2024, numerous reports of coral bleaching were reported in the archipelago, and a request for AFD support was submitted in 2024 to sustain this sub-network, particularly in terms of human resources.
